Subject: An Urgent Appeal Regarding Systemic Misconduct and the Need for Police Reform
Sir,
I am writing to you at present with a heavy heart, representing the silent grievances of millions of Nigerians living in distress. Although I understand the immense responsibilities of your office, the current state of the nation compels me to bring these critical matters to your attention.
Nigerians are currently facing hardships on multiple fronts—from economic suffocation to the constant threat of insurgency. However, it is most disheartening when the very institution established to protect the citizenry—the Nigeria Police Force—becomes a source of terror.
Specifically, I wish to highlight the following critical issues:
- Extrajudicial Killings: We continue to witness tragic incidents where armed officers discharge firearms against unarmed citizens in broad daylight without remorse. Often, fellow officers on the scene fail to restrain their colleagues, denoting a systemic lack of accountability.
- Corruption and Extortion: Many citizens now view reporting a crime as a business transaction. Officers frequently demand payment to open files, conduct investigations, or even grant bail, which should be free.
- Harassment and Invasiveness: Many young people and professionals are upset about officers searching their phones and belongings without cause and under threat.
I implore you, Sir, to use your good office to investigate these rogue units and guarantee that justice is served. We know that there are heroic and dedicated officers within the force, but their reputation is being tarnished by those who act with impunity.
Please, in the name of justice and for the future of our nation, help us restore the Nigeria Police Force to an institution of pride and integrity. We seek a force that is a true friend to the people, not an oppressor.
Thank you for your service and for reviewing this plea.
Yours faithfully,
EKO
